Gene Cloud Spearfishing Tournament July 14th - Reef & Beach Clean Up Sept 8th/9th
He was born in Ellenton, FL at Rocky Bluff. He graduated from Manatee High School in 1953, where he played football for coach Wheeler Leeth. After serving in the Marine Corps, he came home and started Cloud Insurance Agency, which he owned for 56 years.
He attended West Bradenton Baptist Church and Island Baptist Church. He was very active in Boy Scouts, serving as scoutmaster of Troop 102 at Palma Sola Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Hernando DeSoto Historical Society, where he served as General Chairman, Captain of the Crew, and Hernando DeSoto in 1973. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club and served on the Board of Directors of Youth for Christ.
He and his late father, Gene Cloud, Sr. were pioneer spear fishermen in Manatee County. Together they speared a Jewfish that weighed 545 lbs. at a survey tower for the Skyway Bridge in 1953. He mentored many in Bradenton in scuba diving and spearfishing including Gene Tharp, his son Trey, and and friends like Taylor Chadsey, Ed Kinkopf and many others. He loved to compete in spearfishing events with Larry Borden; another accomplished Bradenton diver. He spent many summers lobster diving and spearfishing throughout the Florida Keys.
He also loved hunting in Florida, Georgia, and Alaska. He loved spending time at hunting camp and telling stories around the campfire. He had many adventures in Alaska hunting moose and caribou, snowmobiling, and visiting friends in Wasilla.
Gene Cloud, Jr. passed away December 9, 2013 at the age of 78. He is survived by his sons, Trey, Gary, Keith, Kevin; three grandchildren, Brenton, Jennifer, and Tanner, and 2 great grandchildren all of Bradenton, FL;
